The people of Makkah had not accepted Islam and were still worshiping idols. Many people from around Arabia would come to Makkah to worship these Idols.
Islam taught the people that Allah is one and that all forms of Idol worship is wrong. Islam taught the people about Allah; about good behaviour and character; and about truth and justice.
The Makkans knew that Islam was the truth but still tried every trick to stop people becoming Muslims. They made life very difficult for our Prophet (pbuh) and the Muslim community. They would invent lies about our prophet (pbuh) hoping that people would not trust our Prophet. They used to say that our Prophet (pbuh) was a magician and the words of the Qur’an were magic! They would meet people on the outskirts of Makkah and tell them to keep away from the Prophet (pbuh).
However, people still continued to accept Islam and the Makkans began to persecute the Muslims even more. Often they would beat the Muslims very badly and cause them much suffering. Sometimes the suffering was so much that some Muslims died from it. However, the Muslims continued to follow Islam.
The Makkans began a boycott of the Muslims so that the Muslims could not get any food and no one would do business with them. Things became very bad for the Muslims and the whole community was close to starvation. The Muslims never gave up on Islam and on our beloved prophet (pbuh).
The Makkans would attack our Prophet (pbuh) and be very rude to him. However, he continued to teach people about Islam. They even promised to make him the wealthiest person in Arabia and make him their king. All they wanted was for him to leave Islam. Despite this the Prophet continued to teach Islam and some years later the whole of Arabia accepted Islam.
