Zayd bin Thabit and his friends were going to help the Muslims defend Madina from the Makkans. The Muslims had to face this formidable army which was huge and had many weapons, horses and armour. The Muslims army was tiny in comparison and had very few weapons.
All the Muslims wanted to join in and help, this was the reason that Zayd and his friends were travelling to Uhud. Zayd and his friends were youngsters so when the Prophet (pbuh) saw them he was not happy with them being there.
Zayd and his friends insisted that they were big enough to stay. The Prophet (pbuh) only allowed a few of the lads to stay, those who were considered strong and skilful enough. The rest, including Zayd, were told to return home.
Zayd was crying as he returned home to his mum. At home, his mum told him to start studying Islam and memorise some Surahs from the Qur’an. From that day his study in Islam began and one day He would become a hafiz and a respected scholar.
A few months later, Zayd took the opportunity to recite some of the Qur’an to the Prophet (pbuh). The Prophet (pbuh) was very happy with Zayd and encouraged him to study more. Soon he became an expert on the Qur’an and many other languages. He then became the secretary of the Prophet (pbuh) and would write on his behalf.
After the Prophet passed away, the Khalifs entrusted him with many great responsibilities. He was in charge of collecting the Qur’an and preserving it in writing. He was loved and respected by all Muslims. We too are indebted to Zayd bin Thabit for all his hard work and knowledge. |
