 | My Story - Loads more sums! | |
Assalamu-alaykum,
When I got home from school both Mum and Dad were hard at work!
Mum had a calculator and my dad had a pile of papers on the kitchen table.
They were very busy working things out. I asked my dad what he was working out. He said, “We are working out our Zakah.”
I asked, “Zakah? What’s one of them?” My dad said, “It’s a compulsory charity which we must give to the poor people!”
I said, “We give lots of money to charity already so why do we also give Zakah”
My dad explained, “Giving money to charity is very important but Zakah is different. We must give Zakah to the poor every year.”
Man! I thought I won’t be doing sums when I grow up but it looks as if sums will be with us all our life! PP
 | Lesson - Importance of Zakah | |
We spend our whole lives working hard and earning money. Sometimes we are so busy in accumulating this wealth that we forget about the poor people who are also entitled to some of the money Allah has blessed us with.
Zakah is a way in which Allah reminds us about our duties to other poorer Muslims. Allah has commanded us (i.e. made it Fardh) to give Zakah every year.
Zakah can not be used to do important work such as digging wells nor can it be used to make roads or hospitals. Zakah must become the property of the poor person.
Zakah is a form of purification as it removes the part of the wealth which now belongs to the poor. This also increases the blessing in the remaining wealth. Zakah also purifies our hearts by removing selfishness and greed from it.

A few sums to get your head around
 | Story - Getting the balance | |
Tha’laba Ibn Hateb came to our Prophet (pbuh) and asked him to make dua for him that Allah increases him in wealth. Our Prophet (pbuh) sent him away without making Dua. Tha’laba came again with the same request and our Prophet (pbuh) sent him away again. Tha’laba insisted a third time and this time our Prophet (pbuh) made a dua that Allah increase him in wealth.
Tha’laba only had a few sheep and soon his flock began to increase. This meant that the man had to move to the outskirts of Madina where there was more space and grazing for his flock. He used to pray regularly with the Muslims in the mosque and now he found it difficult to make it for any prayer there.
It came to the stage that he found it difficult to make the Jummah prayer. He began to miss the Jummah prayer with our Prophet (pbuh). A while later, it was time to pay the Zakah and our Prophet (pbuh) sent two men to collect the Zakah.
Tha’laba refused to pay the Zakah collector telling him to collect it from others and come back to him at the end. When the Zakah collector returned to him, he refused to pay the Zakah again.
When the people found out that he refused to pay they would curse Tha’laba for disobeying our Prophet (pbuh). Tha’laba decided to take the Zakah himself to our Prophet (pbuh). By Allah’s command, our Prophet (pbuh) refused to accept it!
After our Prophet’s time, Tha’laba wanted to pay the Zakah to the Khalifah, Abu Bakr, who also refused to take it. In the time of the second Khalifah, Umar also refused to take the Zakah from Tha’laba because both our Prophet and Abu Bakr had refused.
The man died in this sorry state of not being able to pay his Zakah.

 | Did You Know | |
During the time of Umar bin Abdul Aziz, the Muslims would practice Islam fully and they would pay Zakah properly.
In that time there were so few poor people left that they found it hard to find someone to give Zakah to. If all Muslims paid Zakah fully, world poverty would be eliminated and wealth would be distributed more evenly.

 | Penpal Reflects | |
Assalamu-alaykum, Islam is about being moderate in everything. We should not go to excess in anything but instead get a balance in our life for all our many duties including gaining wealth. We should not be so engrossed in it that we forget all our other duties! PP

Give money to the poor and Allah will bless you with more
In Islam, the pillars are five To complete them, all we must strive
Give Zakah on your silver and Gold And on the stock you haven’t sold
Giving Zakah makes your heart pure As money goes from the rich to the poor
