My story:

Assalamu-alaykum, friends. Amina went running home after school and had a huge grin on her face from ear to ear. I thought, “Oh no! She must have got her school report again!” She seemed really excited and when I got home she began to show off and dance around. She started shouting, “Ha Ha Ha, I got good marks and mum said I am so clever!” Just then Mum came in and she told Amina off. Mum said, ”How many times have I told you not to show off. You know it is wrong!” Amina looked down, stopped smiling and said sorry to Mum. Mum stared at Amina for a while before walking away. Mum was cross as Amina should have known better. Alhamdulillah, my Mum has got good timing! PP
lesson: Illness of the heart

The Heart is the seat of all our emotions of which some emotions are not liked. One such emotion is pride which is considered an ‘illness’ of the heart.

The seriousness of this illness is learned from the following hadith. Our Prophet (pbuh) taught us that a person who has an atoms weight of pride inside his heart will not enter Paradise.

Sometimes when we are good at something or we achieve something good we tend to have pride. Sometimes this can make us feel that we are better than others and we think low of them.

We should remember that Allah has given these qualities and blessings. We should be grateful to Allah and never think that we are better than others. May Allah make it easy for us to identify and remove pride from our hearts.

story: During the night

When our Prophet (pbuh) was given prophethood, he began to invite the people of Makkah to Islam. Most of the people refused to accept Islam, in fact they began to oppose our Prophet (pbuh).

A few people accepted Islam but most of the leaders of Makkah refused to accept Islam. They even began to torture and persecute the Muslims.

Our prophet (pbuh) was once reciting the Qur’an during the night prayers. He would spend much of the night engrossed in the worship of Allah.

Some leaders of Makkah: Akhnus bin Suraiq, Abu Sufyan and Abu Lahab sneaked out in the middle of the night and head towards the Prophet’s (pbuh) house. They didn't know that the other two leaders had also come to listen. They would hide and listen to the beautiful recitation of the Qur’an until Fajr. They would be overwhelmed by the beauty and message of the Qur’an.

When the Makkan leaders were return home, they accidentally met each other and promised each other that they would not come again. However, they were attracted to the Qur’an and the next two nights the same thing happened and they met each other on the way home, again promising not to come again.

They knew in their hearts that the words of the Qur’an were the words of Allah. They also knew deep down that Muhammad (pbuh) was a true messenger of Allah. However, they refused to accept Islam because they had such pride inside their hearts. Only when this pride left their hearts did some of them accepted Islam.

Penpal reflects

Assalamu-alaykum, how often do we achieve something great like score a hat-trick at football or get top marks in a test- we are so pleased with ourselves. We should always remember that this is a gift from Allah and we should never forget to thank Him for it. PP
poems

If you have modesty with every stride
you will rid your heart of all pride

Pride is something which kills the heart
Give it up if you are smart

Never think of yourself as being great
And modesty should be your best mate

Never be arrogant, never be proud
because showing off is not allowed

footsteps: follow the sunnah

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had the cleanest heart
